How the Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker Works

The Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker works in 4 steps.

  1. 1

    Choose the starting side

Write "Row 1 = RS" or "Row 1 = WS" in the notes box to match the pattern.

  2. 2

    Mark the right side

Clip a stitch marker to the RS of the fabric so the face is easy to find.

  3. 3

    Count rows

Tap + Count after each finished row.

  4. 4

    Read the side

Check whether the next row number is odd or even and apply your starting rule.

Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker Formula

The Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker formula uses odd and even row numbers to name the side.

If Row 1 = RS: Row r is RS when r mod 2 = 1, and WS when r mod 2 = 0

If Row 1 = WS: Row r is WS when r mod 2 = 1, and RS when r mod 2 = 0

r
The row number you are about to work
mod 2
The remainder after dividing by 2 (1 for odd, 0 for even)

Worked example: Row 37 in a pattern that starts on the RS: 37 mod 2 = 1, so Row 37 is a RS row. In a pattern that starts on the WS, Row 37 is a WS row.

What is a Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker?

A right side / wrong side tracker is a tool that tells you whether the row you are working faces the right side (RS) or the wrong side (WS) of the fabric. The Crochet Stitch Counter Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker derives the side from the row number and your chosen starting side.

Flat crochet alternates sides every row. The right side is the face that shows on the finished item. Post stitches, bobbles and color changes look different on each side, so patterns tell you which side each row faces.

With Row 1 on the RS, every odd row is RS and every even row is WS. Patterns that start on the WS flip that rule, and the tracker follows whichever rule you set.

What are the Uses of a Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker?

There are 4 main uses of a Right Side / Wrong Side Tracker.

  • Placing post stitches

Front post and back post stitches swap roles on WS rows.

  • Working bobbles

Bobbles push out the back of the work, so WS rows place them on the RS face.

  • Changing colors neatly

Yarn tails end up on the WS when changes happen at the right row.

  • Matching seams

Pieces join RS to RS when every panel starts on the same side.
