How the Granny Square Counter Works
The Granny Square Counter works in 4 steps.
- 1
Set the round target
Enter the rounds per square, such as 6, into Target Goal.
- 2

Note the corner instruction, for example "(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner sp".
- 3
Tap after each round
Press Space or tap + Count after the joining slip stitch.
- 4
Log finished squares
Record each finished square in the notes box, reset and start the next square.
Granny Square Counter Formula
The Granny Square Counter formula gives clusters and stitches for any round of a classic granny square.
Clusters per side in round n = n
Total clusters in round n = 4 × n
Double crochet stitches in round n = 12 × n
- n
- Round number
- 4
- Sides of the square
- 12
- 3 dc per cluster × 4 sides
Worked example: Round 7 has 7 clusters per side, 4 × 7 = 28 clusters in all and 12 × 7 = 84 dc.
Granny Square Counter Conversion Table
The Granny Square Counter conversion table shows clusters and stitches per round, plus an approximate square size in worsted yarn with a 5 mm (US H-8) hook.
| Round | Clusters per side | Total clusters | dc in round | Approx. size (in) | Approx. size (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 4 | 12 | 1.8 | 4.4 |
| 2 | 2 | 8 | 24 | 2.8 | 7 |
| 3 | 3 | 12 | 36 | 3.8 | 9.5 |
| 4 | 4 | 16 | 48 | 4.8 | 12.1 |
| 5 | 5 | 20 | 60 | 5.8 | 14.6 |
| 6 | 6 | 24 | 72 | 6.8 | 17.1 |

| 9 | 9 | 36 | 108 | 9.8 | 24.8 |
| 10 | 10 | 40 | 120 | 10.8 | 27.3 |
Size depends on yarn and tension. Measure a finished square and scale from it.
What is a Granny Square Counter?
A granny square counter is a counter that tracks rounds of a granny square, the 3-double-crochet clusters on each side and the corner spaces. The Crochet Stitch Counter Granny Square Counter keeps each square the same size so the blanket joins flat.
A classic granny square starts with 4 clusters of 3 double crochet (dc) in a ring, separated by chain-2 corner spaces. Every new round adds 1 cluster per side. Round 5 has 5 clusters per side and 20 clusters in all.
Squares for one blanket must match. A square with 1 extra round stands out and stretches the joins.
